What is the method for expanding the root directory in CentOS?

There are typically two methods for increasing the size of the CentOS root directory.

  1. Expanding with LVM (Logical Volume Manager) is a common way to increase storage capacity. To start, you’ll need to add a new hard drive or expand an existing one in the system. Then, use tools like fdisk, parted, etc. to partition the new hard drive. Next, create the partition as a LVM physical volume (PV) and add it to the volume group (VG). Finally, expand the physical volume (PV) to the volume group (VG) and extend the logical volume (LV) to the physical volume (PV). For detailed steps, refer to LVM-related documentation or tutorials.
  2. To resize using GParted: GParted is a free and user-friendly graphical partition tool. You can create a bootable disk with GParted, then use it to boot your computer. In the GParted interface, select the partition you want to resize, then click on the “Extend” option to perform the resizing operation. After resizing is complete, restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Before expanding the root directory, be sure to backup important data and ensure the security of the system and data, no matter which method you choose.
